This sterling or coin silver mug was gifted to the son of Robert Lenox Banks, Secretary of the NY Central Railroad as a Christmas present from Erastus Corning, the mayor of Albany NY from 1834-1837. A state senator from 1842-1845, he was also a Representative in 1857, 1859 and 1863 and he owned one of Albany's most significant businesses, a large hardware store. He helped form the NY Central Railroad by buying large iron grids for the tracks of which he became a major supplier, helping to form other major railroads. He was also president and founder of Albany state bank.

He was also president and founder of Albany state bank. There is a great molded face on the handle and the body is nicely hand-incised. Fully-hallmarked and what I believe to be Gorham. Excellent condition with the original warm patina. DIMENSIONS: 4.5" tall x 4" from rim to handle
